Lashes, Lashes, Lashes

Lashes are such an important part of our face, and I don’t know about you, but when I am sporting a nice a** set of strip lashes or my signature Mega extensions – there is nothing in the world that can bring me down from my throne. As it should be for every one of my Queens. But really, there are so many different types of lashes and so many myths about lashes as well. So let’s get right into it and start with what exactly are lashes – anatomically speaking that is. Lashes are made up of keratin proteins which are soft and easily manipulated. Lashes like all hairs on our body go through a growth cycle.

  1. Anagen – This is the hair-growing stage. This is where the hair is still attached to the blood supply and the base of the follicle. The lashes at this stage are generally shorter than the majority of the lash line.
  2. Catagen – This lasts 10-20 days and is where the lash is actually detached from the blood supply, however, it is secure in the follicle. Anagen lashes are growing beneath the catagen lashes in the follicle.
  3. Telogen – This is the resting phase. The lashes can sit in this phase for up to 100 days. The hair is purely resting there waiting to be pushed away by the new lash in the Anagen stage.

So, long story short lashes are growing, shedding, and growing again every single day. It’s amazing how the body works. How can we maintain gorgeous lashes then if we are always losing them? Well, there are a few handy tips that we can do to maintain our natural lashes and a few myths busted for you as well. The best 2 things we can do for our lashes;

  1. Shampoo your lashes: Absolutely – now before you go and reach for the Pantene, you should know that I mean Lash shampoo! This is gentle enough to use on our eyes, on top of preventing lash mites as well (yep lash mites – look it up).
  2. Lash Serum: Now be careful with this one, lash serum is one of those things that every brand will claim is the “best on the market”. Let me tell you a trade secret – you can make your own. Lash Serum is basically castor oil with some distilled essential oils. You can find some awesome recipes online otherwise of course the Makeup Artisan has you covered.
